Are you preparing to contribute to research through asynchronous activities? This resource is designed to assist respondent in understanding and engaging with self-capture tasks effectively, from pre-work to post-work. Let's delve into the details to ensure a seamless experience throughout your participation.

As a research respondent, you'll receive an email from noreply@discuss.io with the link to your Async Activities/Self Captures.

Before we dive into the steps, it's essential to note:

  1. As a respondent, you don't receive a copy of your responses.
  2. If the Self-Captures layout is configured as 'single tasks,' you won't be able to review your previous answers.
  3. However, if the layout is set to 'all tasks,' you can revisit your self-captures link and review your answers unless you have submitted all of your tasks by clicking on 'done.' Once you click 'done,' your answers will appear as grayed out, indicating that they can no longer be edited or reviewed.

 

Accessing the Activities

  1. Click the general activity link to get started.
  2. To enter an activity, you will need to provide a 'Name' and 'Email' to get started. You will then need to click 'Continue' to agree to the Discuss.io Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, to start the survey/activity.

 

To re-enter an activity/survey after exiting the activity or being timed out of the activity, you must use your unique link. This link will automatically be emailed to you once you have clicked 'Continue' and have agreed to the Discuss.io Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

 

Top Tips & Best Practices: Setting Yourself Up for Success

Some general response guidelines:

  • Be sure to read the instructions before getting started.
  • Responses should be robust, please try to be as detailed as possible.
  • Activities can be completed on any working device (mobile, desktop, tablet, etc.) that has video and photo capabilities.
  • Comments can be left on open-ended questions/tasks to further elaborate on the submission (800 characters max)

Please note that larger files take more time to upload and if your connection is not stable the action may be terminated/broken. If you have trouble when uploading a file or you are unsure whether the file you want to upload is supported please don’t hesitate to contact us by submitting a request from our Help Center.

 

Responding to Self-Captures Tasks

  • Video Response

Video tasks will be indicated by the 'Video Submission' title in the top right-hand corner of each task. There's a maximum length for each video. 

  1. To upload the video, click the 'Upload' button. You will then be taken to a screen where you can either start recording or upload files from the device you are working from.
  2. The record a video, click the blue recording button at the bottom of the screen. Videos longer than the maximum length will not be able to be uploaded.
  3. Once you have finished recording or chosen the video file from your device to upload from the device menu in the top left-hand corner, you can click the blue 'Upload' button in the bottom right-hand corner to submit.
  4. If the file selected is not the one you want to submit, you can click the 'x' on the file or the 'Deselect All' button in the bottom left-hand corner to delete the file from being submitted.

Once the video has been submitted, a green checkmark will appear next to that task to help indicate that the file has been submitted.

Commentary about your video submission can be left below the video upload. The commentary section will only appear after a submission has been made. Click 'Comment' to update the commentary when completed.

  • Screen Recording

While our Async platform doesn't have access to record your screen, you might receive a video response task that requires you to record your screen & upload the video. 

iOS Screen Recording
  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center.
  2. Touch the Microphone Audio button at the bottom of the menu to enable it.

     

  • On newer iPhone models that don’t have a Home button, you need to swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open the Control Center instead. It’s the icon that looks like a small filled-in circle inside of a larger, open circle.
  • “Everything on your screen, including notifications, will be recorded. Enable Do Not Disturb to prevent unexpected notifications” message, you might need to enable Do Not Disturb.

Android Screen Recording
  1. Swipe your finger down from the top of your screen to access the Quick Settings panel.
  2. Look for the "Screen record" option.
  3. Select what you want to record, then tap "Start." The recording will commence after a brief countdown. You can choose to include audio and display touch interactions on the screen before you begin.

After the recording starts you will have:

  1. A toolbar with several tools that can be used during the recording.
  2. A timer indicating how long the recording has been going.
  3. To stop the recording, you can click the stop button located in the toolbar, or swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the notification labeled "Screen recorder."

Uploading Screen Recording Video
  1. Once you have recorded your screen sharing, you can return to the activity/survey you are participating in and proceed to upload the video to the relevant task.
  2. Click on Upload and select the pre-recorded video from your media library
  3. The video will take a few seconds to process and will be added as a response to the task.

  • Photo Response

Photo tasks will be indicated by the 'Photo Submission' title in the top right-hand corner of each task. To upload the photo, click the 'Upload' button. You can upload up to 5 images at one time.

  1. For photos, you will be taken to a screen where you can either start capturing images or upload files from the device you are working from.
  2. To take a picture, click the camera icon button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click the 'Next' button in the bottom right-hand corner to capture more images, add uploads from that device, or submit.
  4. Once you have captured all the images or chosen the photo file(s) from your device to upload from the device menu in the top left-hand corner, you can click the blue 'Upload' button in the bottom right-hand corner to submit.
  5. If the file selected is not the one you want to submit, you can click the 'x' on the file or the 'Deselect All' button in the bottom left-hand corner to delete the file from being submitted.

Once the photo(s) have been submitted, a green checkmark will appear next to that task to help indicate that the file has been submitted.

Commentary about your video submission can be left below the video upload. The commentary section will only appear after a submission has been made. Click 'Comment' to update the commentary when completed.

  • Text Response

  1. When submitting text-based tasks, you can submit up to 2000 characters.
  2. Once you are ready to submit, click 'Save Response'.

  • Document Response

  1. Click the 'Upload a PDF, PPTX or DOCX' button.
  2. Upload the .pdf, .pptx, or .docx you wish to submit.
  3. Leave any comments to help elaborate or further describe your submission

  • Multi-Select Responses

A question will appear with checkboxes next to each option.

  1. You can select answers that apply to you
  2. Save your responses.

 
  • Single-Select Responses

A question will appear with radio buttons next to each option.

  1. You can select only one option that applies to you.
  2. Save your response.
  • Rating Responses

You will see a question presented with a Likert scale. 

  1. You can select only one point on the scale.
  2. Save your response.

  • Ranking Responses

You will see options displayed in a drag-and-drop interface or with arrows and numbers for ranking. 

  1. Arrange the items according to your preference
  2. Save your ranking. 

 

Redo an Activity

In self-capture activities, sometimes the initial response might require additional clarity or detail. When this happens, a "redo request" is issued by the researcher. When a researcher wants you to redo a specific task in an activity they will send a "Redo request". You will then receive an email notification.

  1. The process begins with the arrival of an email in your inbox. This email notifies you that a redo is requested for one of your self-capture activity responses. Go ahead and open the email.
  2. Please, make sure to take note of any additional instructions mentioned by the researcher in the email.RD1 - Copy.PNG
  3. You can now click the link, it will directly take you to a page where you can redo the specific task.
  4. There is a clear indication on the activity page showing the sections that need to be redone. Only the task that needs to be redone is clickable
  5. Go ahead a submit the next response. Make necessary edits or additions based on the feedback provided by the researcher or recruiter. In this example, the response form is required in an image. 
  6. Once satisfied, submit the response. Ensure all required fields or sections of the task are adequately addressed before finalizing your submission.You can now go ahead and submit the whole survey/activity by clicking the "I'm done" button located at the top of the activity.

  7. After successfully submitting your redo response, you will be redirected out of the activity.

Please know that a respondent cannot resubmit the self-capture task without a redo request. If a redo is requested, the respondent must redo the entire task, and once requested, the original response cannot be recalled or canceled.
