Getting Started with Close-Ended Questions

To get started with close-ended questions, navigate to the Edit Activity Tasks page within the Self Captures Module. From here, you can either add a new task or edit an existing one. Once the task is selected, click on the Response Type dropdown. This will display four new options to choose from, including

  • Checkboxes (Multi-Select)
  • Multiple Choice (Single-Select)
  • Rating Scale (Likert)
  • Ranking Scale (Rank Order)

After selecting a response type, you can proceed to configure the task based on the selected option. The details for configuring each response type are covered in the following sections. Once your tasks are set up, click Save & Next to move forward to the Activity Settings page. As always, you can preview the activity before publishing to ensure it meets your requirements.

Configuring Close-Ended Questions

  • Multi-Select (Checkboxes)

The multi-select option allows respondents to choose more than one answer from a list of predefined options. This is ideal for questions where multiple answers may apply.

To configure a multi-select question, select Checkboxes (Multi-Select) from the Response Type dropdown. Enter your question in the provided text field, labeled by task number (e.g., Task 1, Task 2). You can add up to 20 answer options, and each option must be unique to prevent duplicates.

From the respondent’s perspective, the question will appear with checkboxes next to each option. Respondents can select multiple answers and then submit their response.

  • Single-Select (Multiple Choice)

The single-select option allows respondents to select only one answer from a list of predefined options. This type of question is best suited for scenarios where a single response is required.

To set up a single-select question, choose Multiple Choice (Single-Select) as the Response Type. Enter your question in the text field and add up to 20 unique answer options.

When respondents view this question, they will see radio buttons for each option. They can select only one option before submitting their answer.

  • Rating Scale (Likert)

The rating scale, also known as a Likert scale, allows respondents to rate statements on a defined scale, such as 1 to 5. This question type is useful for measuring opinions or attitudes.

To configure a rating scale question, select Rating Scale under the Response Type dropdown. Enter your question in the text field and define the scale, such as 1-3 or 1-5. You can also customize the labels for each scale point, such as "Strongly Disagree" to "Strongly Agree."

Respondents will see the question presented with a Likert scale. They can select one point on the scale and submit their response.

  • Ranking Scale (Rank Order)

The ranking scale question type allows respondents to rank a set of options in order of preference. This format is useful for prioritization or preference evaluations.

To configure a ranking scale question, select Ranking Scale as the Response Type. Enter the options to be ranked in the provided text fields. A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15 options can be added. Additional options can be included by clicking the "Add More" button.

Respondents will see the options displayed in a drag-and-drop interface or with arrows and numbers for ranking. They can arrange the items according to preference and submit their rankings.

Visualizing Responses

Data Visualization Output
The results collected from close-ended questions will be displayed visually to help researchers quickly interpret the data.

For Checkboxes (Multi-Select) questions, the results are presented as bar charts that show how often each option was selected. Similarly, Multiple Choice (Single-Select) questions display bar charts summarizing the frequency of each response.

Downloading Responses

Download Options
To download responses, go to the Activity Results page and click the Download Responses button. You can choose from several download formats, including videos, photos, or an Excel sheet containing text answers.

The Excel sheet organizes responses by rows and columns, with each respondent represented as a row and each question as a column. For close-ended questions, a separate column is provided for each answer option. This format simplifies analysis and allows you to filter or sort data easily.
