This article will cover the system requirements for respondents to join live discussions utilizing Mobile User experience.

  • Respondents need a desktop/laptop, a mobile phone, and the discuss app for mobile screen sharing. If they lack a desktop/laptop, they can refer to the outlined steps for sharing screens via mobile only. In this scenario, while they share their mobile screen, their video feed will be temporarily deactivated.

Desktop Recommendations

  • A modern computer and OS -- older computers are slower and out-of-date operating systems may not be compatible with newer browser versions
  • Any standard webcam (integrated or externally connected via USB) -- we don’t support software that converts phone cams into webcams
  • A wired headset with a microphone -- we have some simple troubleshooting we can do for wireless and Bluetooth headphones but we don’t support them fully because user settings vary wildly for every operating system

Mobile Phone Requirements

Android iOS
OS version 8 + OS version 13 +

The majority of Android Devices in the last 4 years.

Including tablets.

Mobile Screen Share App

When invited for an interview requiring Mobile Screen Sharing, respondents need to download the Discuss app. This requirement is included in the tech check and interview invites template when sent from the platform.

Supported Browser

We support the latest desktop versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

  • Other popular browsers that we don’t support: Any version of IE, Opera, Tor, Samsung (mobile)
We support mobile devices running on Android 8+ or iOS 13+ that are connected to wifi or 4G/5G LTE
  • We also don't support any beta or legacy versions of these browsers or alternative open source builds of them.

Use of unsupported browsers or mobile devices is at your own risk and Discuss.io is not responsible for session failure, cancellations, delays, or other problems that may occur from using unsupported software, hardware, or devices to access the platform.

Bandwidth Requirements

For bandwidth, our base recommendation is 2 megabits per second download and 1 megabit per second upload PER USER for a simple IDI. This is to maintain a good quality video publishing at 350kbps and good quality audio publishing at 30kbps. (Kilobits per second is the speed that data transfers)

Note: That recommended bandwidth will increase significantly with every active participant in a session and any stimulus.

Before joining the session, all participants should close other tabs on their computers and close applications running in the background. This will ensure a stable connection throughout the interview.

Firewalls, VPNs, and Corporate IT

Participants joining from a corporate internet connection or work computer must confirm that firewalls, VPNs, and corporate IT policies will not prevent them from publishing or subscribing to video streams in their browser.

Learn how to work with VPNs and Firewalls here.
